Mauser G98 rifle, manufactured at DWM in 1917. It has subsequently been shortened to about K98 length but is not the interwar version as it retains its G98 rear sight and has a new foresight. In my collection I have an even shorter one which is a definite trench warfare version, hurriedly converted and much shorter (believed to be for tunnellers) and has been independantly verified. It is a strong probability that this G98 was converted for trench fighting, possibly for Sturmtruppen to make up for a shortage of K98af's which these crack assault troops preferred. Condition is used with loss of finish and light surface pitting in places. The lower band is of an unusual pattern as the standard lower band does not fit.
